International audienceUsing data from waves 3 (1996) and 8 (2001) of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), this article explores the question of the determinants of work absences in the EU. The emphasis is placed on the respective effects of sickness compensation and employment protection legislation. Work absences in the last four weeks, for health or other reasons, are analysed using logistic and Tobit regressions. According to the estimation results based on wave 8 of the ECHP, the degree of generosity of the sickness benefit system seems to have a positive impact on the probability of absence, both among men and women.
