Le mouvement de l’habiter: quand le retour à la campagne met en marche une redéfinition de l’habiter

For everyone, inhabiting deals with sedentary : inhabit mainly means getting home, regaining the warmth of the house. This study contrasts with the common sense proposing to find, to search, to explore, to experiment inhabiting in the movement. Reality offers lots of examples of the link between inhabiting and movement, which fosters my idea that inhabiting definition is incomplete. Thus, we will be attentive to physical movement on space like urban exodus, in particular upon the lockdown in 2020, ethnologist’s expedition, compelled migrations, but also to some pathological forms of inhabiting in the city which leads us to redefine inhabiting. The movement of inhabiting is at the same time a physical move, a quest for adventure or a personal exploration. This definition underscores that inhabiting reveals and updates our spatial condition, creates the necessary relations between human beings and space, pools inhabitants whereas getting home isolates each one in their safe place. Inhabiting cannot be stored indoors : inhabiting grows when we are walking, when we consider landscapes, when we bring our attention and our presence to places. Inhabiting is an ordinary and existential adventure which does not expect stops, drowsiness and the inertia of extreme sedentary.A rebours de l’idée partagée d’un habiter sédentaire qui se résout essentiellement dans la chaleur d’un logement, d’un chez-soi, cette étude vise à montrer comment l’habiter se trouve – se cherche, s’explore, s’expérimente – dans le mouvement. Les mouvements physiques des populations, allant de l’exode urbain au voyage de l’ethnologue, de la fuite urbaine lors des confinements de 2020 à la question des migrations forcées, ainsi que les formes plus ou moins pathologiques de l’habiter urbain alimentent l’intuition d’un manque dans la définition classique de l’habiter. Comme déplacement physique, comme élan d’aventure ou comme exploration intime, l’habiter actualise et rend tangible et consciente la condition spatiale de l’être humain. Il s’agit aussi par la mise au jour de ce mouvement de l’habiter de voir comment par lui nous créons les rapports nécessaires à l’espace, les correspondances et les lignes d’une vie, comment habiter met en commun au lieu de nous exclure les uns des autres dans nos antres sécuritaires. Habiter ne reste pas entre quatre murs : il s’étend dans les marches, dans les paysages, dans l’attention et la présence aux lieux. Habiter est une aventure banale et existentielle, il n’est pas dans les arrêts et les sommeils
