The article reviews six decades of development aid and the battle against poverty, demonstrating a move from a concern about “poor nations” to recognition of the disparities among countries and the stratification and social inequalities within each. It covers periods as diverse as the beginning of the Cold War and decolonization, the years of rapid development in the 1960s and 1970s under the influence of Keynesian economics, the dominance of neo-liberalism and finally the proclamation of the Millennium Development Goals in 2000.
