Sites de rencontres et champs des possibles

As a part of a larger research project on the social usage of online dating websites, this article analyses the structure of online dating “web” in France. Based on an inventory of more than thousand sites, it describes not only the diversity of platforms but also how these are organised and how they differ depending on the target population. Given the scientific context – where online dating is generally analysed through majority use and dominant sites – the objective is to show the different ways in which the social characteristics of the target population determine how the users are approached and what services they will be offered. Departing from the idea that the understanding of the interface is a prerequisite to the comprehension of its effective usage, this article presents an analysis of the social areas that different sites create through their architecture, design and discursive frame.Cet article, inscrit dans une recherche sur les usages sociaux de sites internet de rencontres, se propose d’analyser la manière dont se structure la Toile de ces espaces internet en France. À partir notamment d’un inventaire de plus de mille sites nous présentons à la fois la diversité des plates-formes proposées et la manière dont leur organisation diffère selon la population ciblée. Dans un contexte scientifique où la rencontre en ligne est généralement étudiée à travers les pratiques majoritaires et les sites dominants, l’objectif consiste à montrer comment les internautes sont approchés et se voient proposés des outils différents selon leurs caractéristiques sociales. Avec l’idée qu’une connaissance de l’interface constitue une condition préalable à la compréhension de l’usage qui en est fait, nous proposons une analyse des champs des possibles que dessinent différents sites à travers à la fois l’architecture, le design et le cadre discursif employé
