International audienceThe present work illustrates what the study of tonal languages can contribute to the study of intonation. Studying the intonation of a tonal language leads to maintaining a consistent distinction between tones and intonation as separate levels. This perspective is instrumental in bringing out the specificity, richness and complexity of intonation. After recapitulating the essentials of a conceptual framework, we present a modest pilot experiment on Vietnamese and French which confirms the existence of crosswalks between tones and intonation.
