This thesis, devoted to garden design in France between 1867 and 1914, focuses on a turning point in which the formal garden came back into vogue. This turning point, far from being limited to a change in taste, results from of a combination of several phenomena of stylistic, ideological, professional and disciplinary dimensions. Among the mechanisms at work in this modernization movement, we observe a multiplication of publications, the writing of a history, the institutionalization of the discipline, the emergence of a profession with specific teaching and the appearance of a community of amateurs.
