In 1889, nine wooden sculptures, depicting the crucifixion, Virgin Mary and seven apostles, were acquired into the very earliest collections of the National Museum of Finland. They were salvaged from the demolished “Finnish church” in Siuntio; a small wooden church that served the Finnish-speaking minority in the Swedish-speaking region. In this review, their previously unstudied origins are traced through archival research back to a lost altarpiece from 1633. The altarpiece was moved from the medieval stone church to the nearby “Finnish church” in 1773 and eventually dismantled.
