This article examines how the museum value of a historical artefact is formed and how to secure it in the conservation process. The article also discusses the significance of oral history as well as archived records in a historical chain of events. This is exemplified by merchant Anders Roos´ gilded empire table and its transition to a museum object. According to oral tradition Alexander I, emperor of Russia sat at this table while he held his audience during his visit to Kokkola in 1819. This article depicts events related to the visit and tells the history of the table from acquisition to the present.
