The development of biodegradable plastic materials such as Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) gained considerable interest due to the problems and harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment. PHA are bacterial polyesters and were described as one of the most promising sustainable alternatives to petroleumbased plastics. According to several studies, about 20–50% of the total production costs are attributed to the raw materials, and therefore, different types of organic residues have been evaluated as substrates for PHA production.
