SIG et terrain : antinomie ou complémentarité<br />dans le développement d'une Recherche-Action en géomatique ?

Is it still necessary to practise GIS fieldwork? That is the question one may ask nowadays. As numirical systems are spreading more and more widely, data producing organisations are more and more numerous in offering or selling geographical information in every field, and at a distance on the web statistics, terrain numerical models (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission), vectorial data, raster data. So that geographers/geomaticians will produce more and more precise maps with no systematic practice of field work. However, the above should be qualified. The arrival of the Net, the nomadic development of communication, of mobility, and the increasing proportion of the open source characterise the present day evolution of GIS against a democratisation backdrop of access to geographical information, of universal availability of tools and of the virtualisation of data location. In consideration of this, the relationship between GIS and fieldwork is contradictory. One witnesses at the same time a disconnection of field-research, taking into account that access to precise information is increasing and constructed from a distance and that field-research, thinks to various movable implements brought in the field, is an integral part of the system.In addition, GIS are much more than methodological instruments in the service of the specialists in their thinking about geographical space. They are also regarded as organisational components in the practice of and reflection on planning. Besides, the several and even numerous definitions reveal what the concept GIS really is a truly social construct. This shows very well the importance of situating any GIS project within a specific social context. Every project for a structure is unique, and can be understood only with reference to the organisational context in which it is inserted given these conditions, developing a GIS project can not be thought out independently from field-work or even from immersing in it.The interactions between GIS and field have been shown in a doctoral thesis conducted under the aegis of a “Research-Action” (R-A) program involving a forestry organisation and a territorial community. Field has became a place of commitment and mobilisation for geographers who are led to play a double role: that of researchers and that of actors. This Research Action program enables us to go further in a reflection on the interactions between GIS and Field, thought understanding of the relationship between the researcher and field of action. What attitude should one adopt relatively to fieldwork within the scope of this thesis?Finally, fieldwork does not exist in the abstract. It is not a predetermined object which is discovered and analysed by specialists. It is an intellectual construction developing according to the problem that is being posed by the one who is dealing with it, and according to what he wishes to do in his analysis. A researcher's responsibility is fully engaged with regard to his fieldwork choices and relatively to the perspectives of research an action.Avons-nous encore besoin d'aller sur le terrain pour pratiquer les SIG ? Telle est la question que l'on peut se poser aujourd'hui. A l'heure de la généralisation du numérique, les producteurs de données sont de plus en plus nombreux à offrir ou vendre de l'information géographie dans tous les domaines et à distance via Internet (statistiques, modèle numérique de terrain (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission), données vecteurs, fonds rasters). Ainsi, les géographes/géomaticiens produisent de la cartographie de plus en plus précise sans une pratique systématique du terrain.Cependant ces propos sont à nuancer. L'arrivée d'Internet, le développement du nomadisme, de la mobilité et la part croissante de l'open source marquent l'évolution actuelle des SIG sur fond de démocratisation de l'accès à l'information géographique, de la banalisation des outils et de la virtualisation de la localisation des données. Dans ce contexte, la relation entre SIG et terrain est contradictoire. On assiste à la fois à une déconnexion avec le terrain compte tenu de l'accès grandissant et à distance à de l'information précise et, en même temps, le terrain, grâce aux différents outils nomades embarqués, fait partie intégrante du système.De plus, les SIG sont bien plus que de simples outils méthodologiques au service des géographes dans leur réflexion sur l'espace. Ils sont aussi considérés comme une composante organisationnelle dans les pratiques et réflexions sur l'aménagement. D'ailleurs, les définitions multiples et variées sont révélatrices du concept même de SIG : une véritable construction sociale. Ceci montre bien l'importance de replacer tout projet SIG dans un contexte social spécifique. Chaque projet d'une structure est unique, et ne peut être compris qu'en référence au contexte organisationnel dans lequel il s'insère. On ne peut alors imaginer le développement d'un projet SIG sans la pratique, voire « l'immersion » sur le terrain.Les interactions entre SIG et terrain ont été prouvées dans une thèse effectuée dans le cadre d'une Recherche-Action (RA), avec un organisme forestier et une collectivité territoriale. Le terrain devient un lieu d'engagement et de mobilisation pour le géographe amené à occuper une double fonction (chercheur et acteur). Cette RA nous permet d'aller plus loin dans la réflexion sur les interactions entre SIG et terrain en appréhendant les relations entre le chercheur et son terrain. Quelle posture faut-il adopter par rapport au terrain dans le cadre de ce type de thèse ? Finalement, le terrain n'existe pas dans l'absolu. Ce n'est pas un objet prédéterminé que le spécialiste détecte et analyse. C'est une construction intellectuelle qui varie selon la question posée, celui qui l'étudie et ce qu'il compte faire de son étude. La responsabilité du chercheur reste entière quant à son choix de terrain et aux perspectives de recherche ou d'action
