This study deals with the consequences of soil-herbicide interactions on the biodegradation of two herbicides: mesotrione, which has recently been marketed as Callisto® and glyphosate (RoundUp®). Indeed, sorption-desorption phenomena and biodegradation can influence the fate of herbicides in the soil. The use of complementary analytical tools (LC/UV, LC/MS, NMR) allowed us to propose the first complete biodegradative pathway of mesotrione by a pure bacterial strain Bacillus sp. 3B6. Sorption studies of both herbicides on various soil components (cationic and anionic clays, clay fractions, soil) showed the major role of the medium pH on this phenomenon. Biodegradation of mesotrione in the presence of a solid matrix did not lead to any change...
