Uncertainties usually play an important role in structural engineering and their effects need to be evaluated for robustness and safety. Coupling mechanical and stochastic data models for complex systems using a classical procedure may become prohibitive in terms of computer time. This time increases as the probability of failure of interest decreases, and this is a major limitation in using these methods for industrial applications.
