Teoria versus realidade: a pronúncia de inglês como língua franca e o aprendiz adulto

The aim of this research is to investigate beginner adult learners´  views on English pronunciation in the context of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Regarding that a very strong identity aspect of the speakers is the accent, and that in the context of ELF the willing to keep the accent is common among the speakers, this study proposes to verify the adult learners’ views through a questionnaire and analyze them in the light of the key points of ELF theories: current notions of English language influence, identity of the speakers, non native speakers’ accents, and intelligibility. After the analysis, it was found that, among the 16 beginner learners that answered the questionnaire, several of them already understand English as a global language today, whereas some of them still see it as belonging to a specific nation. The majority of the participants show a very strong identity position as Brazilian English speakers. About the participants’ accents, a big part of them seeks to achieve native-like pronunciation, chooses the American variation and considers the intelligibility factor as the most important during communications, judging the non-native accent less intelligible. Through this study, it is hoped to demonstrate that although ELF theories are widely disseminated in academia, in the classroom learners have some views that do not always correspond to theories.O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar as visões do aprendiz adulto iniciante a respeito da pronúncia de inglês no contexto de Inglês como Língua Franca (ILF). Considerando que um aspecto bastante forte de identidade dos falantes é o sotaque e que no contexto de ILF é comum entre os falantes o desejo de manter seus sotaques, este trabalho se propõe a verificar as visões dos aprendizes adultos por meio de questionário e analisá-las à luz dos pontos chave das teorias: noções atuais da influência da língua inglesa; identidade dos falantes; sotaques dos falantes não nativos e inteligibilidade. Após análises, identificou-se que entre os 16 aprendizes iniciantes que responderam ao questionário, vários já têm a noção de que o inglês hoje é uma língua global, enquanto que muitos ainda o veem como pertencente a uma nação. A maioria dos participantes apresenta uma forte posição de identidade como brasileiros falantes de inglês. A respeito dos sotaques, grande parte procura atingir a pronúncia nativa, escolhe a variação estadunidense e considera o fator de inteligibilidade o mais importante durante comunicações, julgando o sotaque não nativo menos inteligível. Com este trabalho, espera-se demonstrar que, apesar das teorias de ILF serem bastante disseminadas no meio acadêmico, dentro da sala de aula os aprendizes têm visões que nem sempre correspondem às teorias.&nbsp
