An Evaluation of The Relationship Between Coping, Emotional Intelligence And Psychological Well-Being Among Nigerian Undergraduates

This is a pilot study that investigates the relationship between coping, emotional intelligenceand psychological well-being among the undergraduate students. Two hundred and five (205)undergraduates students (129 males & 76 females) were randomly selected from fivedepartments in the Faculty of the Social Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Theseparticipants are aged between 18 and 35 years with a mean age of 24. The research instrumentsused are the psychological well-being scale (Ryff, 1989)- as a measure of psychological wellbeing,the brief COPE Carver, (1997), - used to measure coping whereas EmotionalIntelligence Inventory (Tapia, 2001), was employed as a measure of emotional intelligence.Cross-sectional survey design was used for the study. The result of the linear regressionanalysis indicates a significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence andpsychological-wellbeing. None of the coping strategies has been found to be significant andsubsequent findings are discussed
