Oxidation of the mycotoxin aflatoxin (AF) B1 yields the 8,9-epoxide, which nonenzymatically hydrolyzes rapidly to a dihydrodiol that in turn undergoes slow, base-catalyzed ring opening to a dialdehyde [Johnson, W.
