Premature birth is the main risk factor for cerebral palsy. The strategy used to reduce the rate of cerebral palsy in premature births is magnesium sulfate. Objective: To describe the level of scientific evidence that exists upon the use of magnesium sulfate as fetal neuroprotection in premature birth by reviewing scientific articles. Methodology: The databases of the Cochrane Library, Medline, Pubmed, Scielo, The Lancet, Elsevier, and others were consulted looking for clinical studies, articles, systemic reviews, and meta-analyzes that meet the proposed inclusion criteria.
