Integration through Physical education : Difficulties and opportunities in physical educationfor students with immigrant background

The aim of this study was to examine opportunities and difficulties in physical education and how teachers can adapt physical education for students with an immigrant background. In recent years there has been an increase in newly arrived students in Sweden. For newly arrived students, the Swedish school can function as an arena for integration into the Swedish society. Physical education should function as a safe and welcoming place for students with immigrant background. Nevertheless, several students with immigrant background find the subject challenging. A systematic literature review has been used as a method for this study, where both qualitative and quantitative studies has been used. A total of 12 scientific studies have been selected for this study after being reviewed. The conclusion shows that integration through physical education depends on several factors. Physical education works as a good environment for students who do not master the language in which the teaching is conducted. Body language and the universal rules of sports go a long way when teaching students. There is a lack of sufficient adequate research in Swedish physical education linked to integration to ensure that physical education has major positive effects on the integration of students with an immigrant background. An increased knowledge among teachers about integration and inclusion could contribute to understanding how students with an immigrant background encounter the Swedish school
