Disputas de poder entre el Estado y la Iglesia Católica en el siglo XIX chileno: la educación de la mujer

This paper focuses on the debate over the education of women in Chile during the 19th. C in the context of the conflicts between the Catholic Church and the State for the control of the republican public space. The hypothesis is that there were no major differences between liberals and clericals regarding gender policies. Their disputes originated, on the part of the State, to avoid women’s defense of ecclesiastical policies. On the part of the Church, its main concern was to preserve women as its bulwark for the Catholicity of the nation. It was a problem of power. The text addresses important polemics on the subject in order to illustrate the hypothesis.Este artículo analiza el debate en torno a la educación de la mujer en Chile durante el siglo XIX, desde la perspectiva de los conflictos entre la Iglesia Católica y el Estado por el control del espacio público republicano. La hipótesis es que no hubo mayores diferencias respecto de políticas de género entre liberales y clericales, sino que las disputas se originaron, por parte del Estado, para evitar que la mujer favoreciera las políticas eclesiásticas y, por parte de la Iglesia, por mantenerlas como baluarte de la catolicidad de la nación. Se trató de un problema de poder. El trabajo se organiza en torno a ciertas polémicas que permiten ilustrar la hipótesis
