The breaking of the isospin symmetry is discussed from the pointof view of the nuclear shell-model. The accuracy of the theoretical framework isdemonstrated on the description of the isobaric multiplet splittings. The use ofphenomenological versus realistic interactions is discussed. We demonstrate the relevanceof the theoretical description for isospin-forbidden processes. The developedformalism is important for the calculation of isospin-symmetry breaking correctionsto the weak-interaction process on nuclei, and it can provide missing information onthe structure of proton-rich nuclei relevant for astrophysics applications
