Exploitation and use of marble in Galicia from Roman times to the completion of the Romanesque Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (1st-13th centuries A.D.)

La question de l’exploitation du marbre a peu retenu l’attention des chercheurs sur le territoire galicien, et ce, en dépit de l’importance patrimoniale de certaines pièces romaines et médiévales façonnées dans ce matériau. La présente étude tente de pallier cette carence. Elle couple un travail de prospection-inventaire des carrières, effectué à l’échelle de cette aire géographique, avec l’analyse d’un ensemble de pièces archéologiques de nature diverses (inscriptions, chapiteaux, fûts de colonnes, sarcophages, etc.), pour certaines issues d’édifices emblématiques tels que Santa Eulalia de Bóveda, Santa Comba de Bande ou encore la cathédrale de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Si une attention particulière a été donnée aux informations de tout ordre pouvant éclairer la compréhension de l’exploitation et de l’usage de ce matériau, l’étude s’appuie avant tout sur une analyse géologique du problème. La méthode séquentielle associant examen pétrographique, imagerie OM-CL et rapports des isotopes stables du carbone et de l’oxygène a été appliquée. Cette mise en œuvre s’est accompagnée d’un effort d’amélioration du protocole avec la définition plus fine des critères descriptifs des cathodomicrofaciès et l’emploi de techniques complémentaires d’examen peu courantes (spectrophotocolorimétrie, MEB-EDS, DRX, spectroscopie par CL, RAMAN, ICP-OES) ou totalement novatrices avec la RMN du 13C. Outre la portée méthodologique de ce travail dans le cadre général des études de provenance des marbres, cette étude a permis notamment de mettre en évidence l’emploi probable à l’époque romaine d’une ressource insoupçonnée en Galice, située à une vingtaine de km de l’ancienne capitale de conventus Lucus Augusti ; de confirmer l’homogénéité matérielle des chapiteaux préromans de la région et leur correspondance avec le marbre d’O Incio ; de montrer l’usage sporadique de matériaux issus de Luni-Carrare ainsi que des districts portugais de l’Anticlinal d’Estremoz et de Trigaches. Enfin, la mise en relation étroite des données historiques avec l'examen géologique des pièces nous a permis, dans le cas de l’ancienne porte de France de la cathédrale de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, de proposer une nouvelle hypothèse de restitution de cette entrée monumentale, offrant une vision beaucoup plus cohérente de l’ensemble sur le plan architectural.The question of the exploitation of marble has received little attention from researchers on the Galician territory, despite the heritage importance in this area of some Roman and medieval pieces shaped in this material. Following on the Marmora Galicia project, the present study attempts to cover this lack. On the scale of this geographical area, it combines fieldwork and quarry survey-inventory with the analysis of a set of miscellaneous archaeological pieces (inscriptions, capitals, column shafts, sarcophagi, etc.), including some from emblematic buildings such as Santa Eulalia de Bóveda, Santa Comba de Bande and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Although special attention has been given to information of all kinds that can shed light on the exploitation and use of this material, the study is mainly based on a geological analysis of the problem. The sequential method used successfully in other sectors, combining petrographic/cathodoluminescence examination and stable isotope ratios of carbon and oxygen was applied. This implementation was accompanied by an effort to improve the protocol with the finer definition of the descriptive criteria of the cathodomicrofacies and the use of complementary examination techniques that are either uncommon (spectrophotocolorimetry, SEM-EDS, XRD, SEM-CL, RAMAN, ICP-OES), or totally innovative with the first application of Carbon-13 NMR. In addition to the methodological contribution of this work in the general framework of marble provenance studies, this study has highlighted in Galicia the probable use in Roman times of an unsuspected resource, located about twenty km from the ancient capital of conventus, Lucus Augusti; has confirmed the material homogeneity of the pre-Romanesque capitals of the region and their correspondence with the marble of O Incio; and has also showed the sporadic use of materials from Luni-Carrara as well as from the Portuguese districts of the Estremoz Anticline and Trigaches. Finally, the close connection of historical data with the geological examination of the pieces allowed us, in the case of the ancient French door of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, to propose a new hypothesis for the restitution of this monumental entrance, offering a much more coherent vision of the ensemble from an architectural point of view
