Copper is a soft, ductile metal with high thermal and electrical performance. However, it is not totally inert. For metallic materials under environmental conditions for which passivation does not work, one method of protection is to use corrosion inhibitors. In this work, the effect of the 2-MBT and MBI molecules on the oxidation mechanism of Cu (111) has been studied, using a combination of advanced surface characterization techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary Ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).
