This thesis studies the interplay between Euroscepticism, party politics, and political gain. More specifically, it seeks to determine the extent to which the potential for political gain has determined the positions of mainstream parties and individual politicians on European integration, and why European integration has been a cause of divisions within some mainstream political parties, yet not in others. As a starting point, this thesis uses key arguments in the literature, notably that political ideology is shaped by strategy, that a party’s position on integration can affect its electoral fortunes, and that intra-party divisions on questions of integration present a great challenge for political elites.
