La conscience du lieu, de l'oeuvre, du spectateur, et le jeu chez Daniel Buren

The purpose of this thesis is to propose a synthetic interpretation of Daniel Buren’s work and to delve into certain aesthetic subjects on which his works make us reflect, namely the semiotic and phenomenological aspect of the artwork, the role of the attention, the relationship between the work and its context and what the pictorial representation is, through analyzes of his works and the re-examination of aesthetic issues concerned. We approach works created by the artist from 1964 to 2016 whose main feature lies in the plastic intervention in the real context, what the artist calls the in situ work (site-specific work). They bring into question the definition of art, more specifically the autonomy of art, the myth of art, the function of the museum, etc., being accompanied by many texts of the artist. Despite the artist’s intention that instrumentalizes his immutable stripes as an index, their graphic manifestation makes us think of the iconicity, another aspect of the sign. Then, the arrangement of his stripes and of plastic materials in the real objects incites the spectator to organize a phenomenological figure as a work. To the perception of iconicity and of indexicality in the visual field and to the act of figuration, a reading of the work and of its context by the spectator is added, and all these elements should concern the representation in the arts. The exhibition of his work leads the spectator to organize a figure of work together with the place and himself by limiting his act of general thematization to the aesthetic play. The outcome concludes that the spectator becomes aware of the work, the place and himself.Cette thèse a pour objet de proposer une interprétation synthétique des travaux de Daniel Buren et d’approfondir certains sujets esthétiques sur lesquels ses travaux nous amènent à réfléchir, à savoir l’aspect sémiotique et phénoménologique de l’œuvre d’art, le rôle de l’attention, le rapport entre l’œuvre et son contexte, et ce qu’est la représentation iconique, à travers des analyses de ses travaux et des réexamens de problèmes esthétiques. Nous abordons les travaux réalisés par l’artiste depuis 1964 jusqu’à 2016, dont la particularité principale consiste en une intervention plastique dans le contexte réel, ce que l’artiste appelle travail in situ. Ils mettent en jeu la notion d’art, plus précisément l’autonomie de l’art, le mythe de l’art, la fonction du musée, etc., en s’accompagnant des textes de l’artiste. Malgré l’intention de l’artiste qui instrumentalise ses bandes immuables en tant que déictique, leur manifestation graphique fait penser à l’iconicité, un autre aspect du signe. L’agencement de ses bandes et de matières plastiques dans les objets réels incite le spectateur à organiser une figure phénoménologique en tant qu’œuvre. À la perception de l’iconicité et de l’indicialité dans le champ visuel et à l’acte de figuration, s’ajoute une lecture du travail et du contexte par le spectateur, et tous ces éléments doivent concerner la représentation dans l’art. L’exposition du travail de Buren entraîne le spectateur à organiser une figure composée du travail, du lieu et du spectateur lui-même, en limitant son acte de thématisation générale au jeu esthétique.
