The synthesis of amino acids and peptides is one of the major problems of prebiotic chemistry.Our work begins with a study of the synthesis of cysteine from mercaptoacetaldehyde. Mercaptoacetaldehyde was formed from chloroacetaldehyde, itself obtained by chlorination of acetaldehyde. We then cyclized homocysteine in water to form its thiolactone, a 5-membered ring, capable of reacting with amino acids and forming peptide bonds. We tested the formation of peptides from homocysteine thiolactone as well as from its formyl and acetyl derivatives. Finally, we tried to synthesize S-methyl methionine, SMM, a potential methyl donor, a simplified analogue of S-adenosyl methionine, SAM.
