TRNAs carry many post-transcriptional modifications of nucleosides. These chemical maturation reactions can occur on the bases and sugar of the tRNA. Among RNAs the tRNA family has the largest number of modified nucleotides with 92 known modifications. The functions of these modifications are gradually beginning to be elucidated. In general, modifications of the nucleotides of the anticodon loop are necessary for correct codon-anticodon pairing and recognition by aminoacyl RNA synthetase. Modifications in the T and D loops facilitate the folding and stabilization of the L-structure of the tRNAs.
