A model of crack deflection along an interface or within the interphase of ceramic matrix composites and multilayers is proposed. It is based on the Cook and Gordon's mechanism: a crack is nucleated along an interface, ahead of a matrix crack; the deflection results from coalescence of both cracks. This mechanism has been already observed on several material combinations. The crack deflection analysis involves stress and energy-based concepts. Finite element computations of the stress state ahead of matrix crack lead to a crack deflection/non-deflection criterion. It has been applied to a lot of experimental situations available in the literature. Moreover this approach has permitted to predict crack deflection or to calculate mechanical pr...
