Pauline Viardot-Garcia, a well-known mezzo-soprano from the mid nineteenth century inspired a generation with her incredible instrument and intelligent performances on stage. Viardot-Garcia was also a profoundly talented composer and lived center of the creative musical world during her lifetime. Through a study of her life and three of her operettas, this thesis endeavors to answer the question of why she is not remembered with the same fervor and reverence as her male counterparts such as Charles Gounod and Camille Saint- Saëns.
