The calcination-vitrification process has been used in France for over 30 years for the containment of high level nuclear waste arising from the spent fuel reprocessing. The use of numerical tools has proved to be essential for the process understanding and optimization. In the past ten years,numerical simulation works on the thermal, hydraulic and electromagnetic aspects involved in the vitrification process have been carried out in the context of the cold crucible development, a new type of furnace commissioned in 2010.
