Émile Zola started to write short stories at the beginning of his carrier. The image of the pioneer of Naturalism has always obscured this minor part of his literary production, which was regarded as a mere genetic support of his primary works. Nevertheless, Zola wrote short fiction throughout his entire literary and journalistic career and this rich ensemble of texts must not be considered as a minor and futile part of his artistic production, since it also offers new and enlightening elements. By reading the works of Zola “conteur” through the prism of literary sociology, we can not only realize how much the short stories have contributed to the authorship of the writer, but also observe the evolution of Zola’s artistic and literary ideas...
