L'étude des noyaux riches en neutrons permet de sonder la matière nucléaire en fonction du degré d'isospin et d'observer l'évolution des fermetures de couches loin de la stabilité. De récents travaux expérimentaux ont montré l'apparition d'un nouveau nombre magique à N=32 dont les effets sont particulièrement prononcés pour 52Ca. Les isotopes de calcium très riches en neutrons (N>29) sont en effet des noyaux clés pour tester l'interaction neutron-neutron effective dans la couche fp grâce à la simplicité de leur fonction d'onde due à la fermeture de couche Z=20.
