The notion of cultural identity in British cinema from 1979 to 2001

Les minorités afro-caraïbe et indo-pakistanaise, tout comme l'Ecosse, le pays de Galles et l'Irlande du Nord, ont indéniablement gagné en visibilité dans la société britannique grâce au cinéma dans les années 80 et 90. Cette étude a cherché, grâce au concept de champ conçu par Pierre Bourdieu, à déterminer certains principes régissant la production des représentations culturelles. Un premier chapitre sur les conditions de production au sens large nous a permis de comprendre les conditions de possibilité de ces films. Un second chapitre sur l'espace des réalisateurs nous a de plus permis de considérer ces productions comme étant le résultat de prises de positions et de stratégies de la part des auteurs mais qui restent soumises aux influences externes, politiques et intellectuelles notamment. Chaque groupe culturel a ensuite fait l'objet d'une étude plus détaillée qui a consisté à s'intéresser au contexte et aux contraintes qui leur étaient spécifiques. Ces mises en perspective ont pris tout leur sens dans les analyses filmiques du dernier chapitre qui ont entre autres montré que si le cinéma commercial contribuait généralement au conservatisme des représentations, il pouvait sous certaines conditions participer à leur renouvellement. De la même manière, le cinéma indépendant qui encourageait traditionnellement l'innovation pouvait aussi perpétuer certains stéréotypes. Si la nature des représentations résulte donc d'un univers de déterminations politiques intellectuelles, économiques et sociales, elle reste fortement liée au monde du cinéma et à ses règles.The British Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities, together with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, became more visible on the British screen and consequently in British society at large in the 80s and 90s. Through the use of Pierre Bourdieu s concept of field, this study seeks to determine certain principles which govern the making of cultural representations. The first chapter looks at the conditions of production in a broad sense and outlines the complex conditions which made these films in particular possible. The second chapter on the space of film directors then shows those representations as being the result of the authors positions and strategies while being influenced by external intellectual and political factors. Each cultural entity is then analysed in its specific context and with the particular requirements imposed on its filmmakers. These general principles are finally explored in more depth and detail in the last chapter using six examples (three Scottish films and three Afro-Caribbean and Asian films). Analysis of these works suggest that although mainstream cinema generally contributes to conservative representations, it is sometimes able to generate new images, in the same way that independent cinema, prone by nature to innovation, occasionally perpetuates stereotypes. The conservative or innovative nature of cultural representations, while partially resulting from social, economic, political and intellectual factors, therefore remains largely determined by the world of cinema and its rules
