Kress building, 811 North Franklin Street, Tampa, Fla., west facade

The building, from 1929, was home to the S.H. Kress and Co. five-and-ten-cent store. It features a fireproofed skeleton with concrete floors poured in place and a brick and terra-cotta cover that makes the prettiest face in town. The terra-cotta trim and details, glazed and multi-colored, on the two almost identical facades (east and west) are this building\u27s claim to fame. The eastside of Kress has the stairwell (treated like a column) and this facade is therefore slightly asymmetrical. Since 1980, the store has been closed.
