Tidal stream turbines are a new technology for extracting kinetic energy from tidal currents. A number of different concepts of such devices have been proposed up to now and the most popular of them is a horizontal-axis turbine with propeller-type blades. Although the concept looks similar to a typical wind turbine, guidelines for the design and reliability assessment of wind turbine blades are not applicable for those of tidal stream turbines due to a number of reasons, in particular much higher loads on the blades of tidal turbines since seawater is about 830 times denser than air.
