Scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) is arguably the most powerfultool for materials characterization at the nanoscale. To image and understand the structure and composition of materials and nanoscale devices have been the main use of such instruments. The recent instrumental advance in monochromated STEM has improved the energy resolution of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to only a few meV. This has enabled low energy excitations, such as phonons and infrared plasmons, to be observed with high spatial resolution.
