The final version of Madama Butterfly's libretto is a result of modifications that took place in four subsequent variants of this opera. Puccini gave the utmost importance to the dramatic and emotional expression of his works; each change made in the libretto was aimed to strengthen the stage effect. In the present paper we will examine how language modifications in the selected scenes of Madama Butterfly influenced dramatic and emotional expression of this opera in the whole. The evolution of the main characters based on literary sources of the libretto (a short story Madame Butterfly by John Luther Long and a unanimous play by David Belasco) will be also analyzed.AGNIESZKA MUSZYŃSKA-ANDREJCZYK - italianistka, muzyk, adiunkt w Międzywydzia...
