Methodological proposal for teaching english outside the school environment

Tesis (Magíster en la Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera)The present research seeks to develop a methodological proposal that would guide teachers of English to choose and create proper material to teach the language to heterogeneous groups of students in contexts different from the traditional school environment. This action research was conducted at Pre Universitario Solidario Universidad Santa María, a special program created by students from that University, with the help of student teachers from diverse areas, aiming at helping high-school students from different schools of the region to achieve the language competences for the PSU (University Selection Test) and further studies. The teachers in charge of the workshop created a curriculum that would benefit the development of their communicative skills as well as deal with students' favorite topics. Once the curriculum was applied, it became visible that there were sorne problems and they were not related to the lesson planning or content, but to methodology. After there was a swift from a grammatical to a communicative approach, there was a better attitude towards language learning.La presente investigación busca desarrollar una propuesta metodológica que guíe a profesores de inglés a escoger y crear material adecuado para enseñar el lenguaje a un grupo heterogéneo de estudiantes en contextos diferentes al de la escuela tradicional. Esta investigación-acción se llevó a cabo en el Pre-Universitario Santa María, un programa especial creado por estudiantes de dicha universidad con el fin de ayudar a alumnos de enseñanza media de diversas escuelas de la región a prepararse para la Prueba de Selección Universitaria y sus estudios futuros. Las profesoras a cargo del taller crearon un currículo que beneficiaría el desarrollo de las habilidades comunicativas en inglés y a la vez que lidiaría con los temas de interés del alumnado. Una vez puesto en marcha el currículo, se volvió evidente que existían algunos problemas que no tenían relación con la planificación o los contenidos, sino que con metodología. Después de realizarse el cambio desde un enfoque gramatical a uno comunicativo, los alumnos mejoraron su actitud y resultados
