Psychological treatment of cannabis addiction review

Introduction. Cannabis is the most consumed worldwide illegal psychoactive substance, but the demand of treatment is low in comparison with other substances. In recent years, these have been increasing, and with them, so have systematic research on psychosocial treatments for problems with cannabis use. Objectives. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on psychological treatments for addiction to cannabis, clarifying their effectiveness. Methodology. We have conducted a search in PsycINFO and PubMed database using as keywords "psychological treatment" and "cannabis" and limiting the time period between 2005 and 2015. Finally, we have selected a total of 24 articles. Results. The results of each of the selected articles are presented, divided in two sections: general population and specific for adolescents. Conclusions. First, the effectiveness of psychological treatments in treating problems with cannabis use is highlighted. Second, the combination of contingency management with motivational interviewing and/or cognitive-behavioral therapy seems to be the best tool address the problem. Likewise, the multidimensional family therapy also appears to be outstanding to design treatment programs for adolescentsIntroducción. El cannabis es la sustancia psicoactiva ilegal más consumida en el mundo pero la demanda de tratamiento es baja en comparación con otras sustancias. En los últimos años se han ido incrementando y, con ello, las investigaciones sobre tratamientos psicosociales para los problemas con el consumo de cannabis. Objetivo. Realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre los tratamientos psicológicos para la adicción al cannabis, clarificando su eficacia. Metodología. Se ha realizado una búsqueda en las bases de datos PsycINFO y PubMed utilizando como palabras clave “psychological treatment” and “cannabis” y limitando el intervalo temporal al periodo2005-2015. Se han seleccionado un total de 24 artículos. Resultados. Se presentan los resultados de cada uno de los artículos seleccionados, divididos en dos apartados: población general y específicos para adolescentes. Conclusiones. Destacar la eficacia de los tratamientos psicológicos en problemas relacionados con el consumo de cannabis. Por otra parte, la combinación del manejo de contingencias con la entrevista motivacional y/o la terapia cognitivo-conductual parece ser la mejor herramienta para abordar el problema. De la misma forma, la terapia familiar multidimensional parece ser apropiada para el diseño de programas de tratamiento para adolescentesS
