Chapter I of this study deals briefly with the geographical and historical description of the Island of Sri Lanka and the Colombo District, and gives such background information including the pattern of development of the Urban Sector of the Colombo District, as is necessary to set this study in its correct perspective. Throughout this study, due to the distinct features and characteristics of the City on the one hand, and the rest of the Urban Sector of the District, on the other, and as they are in different stages of development, they have been treated separat ely, wherever necessary
