High organic strength wastewaters from food industry, distilleries, breweries etc. are conventionally treated by anaerobic digestion due to low sludge production, derivation of biogas and low operating costs. However anaerobic process is extremely slow and hence requires large space and therefore capital cost intensive. On the other hand, aerobic treatment is rapid, efficient with stable end products yet the considerable sludge formation is a major disadvantage.
