Aims Two putative probiotic strains, Lacticaseibacillus (Lc.) rhamnosus BFE5264 and Lactiplantibacillus (Lp.) plantarum NR74, have been shown to suppress cholesterol uptake and promote cholesterol efflux in Caco-2 cells. However, an in vivo beneficial effect of these strains on plasma cholesterol levels has not been verified yet; neither have the underlying mechanisms of regulating cholesterol metabolism clarified thus far.
