Heterotopía en Foucault y su utilidad en el análisis de la arquitectura posmoderna: la singularidad generalizada

The course that takes this notion -from the strange to the generalised-, becomes a possibility to understand the nature of postmodern architecture; recognising it as heterotopic facilitates to assimilate its paradox: looking for the singularity one finds with the ‘urbanalización’. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the notion of heterotopia proposed by Michel Foucault in his conference Des Espaces Autres, and the turn that is given, later to incorporate it into the understanding of architecture and the postmodern city. With a qualitative approach, it starts from Foucault's embryonic concept, covering its context and its theoretical scope, through its decomposition. Foucault formulated the notion of heterotopia as a tool (unrestricted), to controvert spatial aspects of his contemporaneity; but it does not include an explicit architectonical disciplinary look. For this, both the reflexive critic and the architectonical exploration, worked, special attention is given to the interpretations and applications given as an instrument. Having as a pillar, the Foucauldian idea of "toolbox", in this study, it was possible to give a new interpretation to the notion of heterotopia: it is useful for interpreting features of buildings and cities in postmodernity. In this sense, it is argued that the heterotopic nature – ‘the other’- is in the essence of the postmodern. This served to conclude that, from the singular, ‘the other’ (meaning, the strange), the heterotopic, in the postmodern architecture, can be understood as forms others (in relation with the modern). This becomes a paradox: the singular generalised as new order. Which produces, intentionally, others places, because the spatial syntaxis of the city is modified; that is to say, it turns the city an ‘other’ place.Esta tesis estudia la noción original de heterotopía, seguidamente sus interpretaciones y aplicaciones en distintos autores y disciplinas. El curso que toma esta noción -de lo extraño a lo generalizado-, se convierte en posibilidad para comprender la naturaleza de la arquitectura posmoderna; El hecho de reconocerla como heterotópica facilita asimilar su paradoja: buscando la singularidad se encuentra la “urbanización”. El propósito es analizar la noción de heterotopía planteada por Michel Foucault, en su Conferencia Des Espaces Autres, y el giro que se le dio, posteriormente, para incorporarla en la comprensión de la arquitectura y la ciudad posmoderna. Con un enfoque cualitativo, se parte del concepto embrionario de Foucault, abarcando su contexto y sus alcances teóricos, mediante su descomposición. Foucault formuló la noción de heterotopía, como una herramienta (no restringida), para controvertir aspectos espaciales de su contemporaneidad; pero no incluyó una mirada disciplinar arquitectónica explícita. Por esto, tanto en la crítica reflexiva como en la exploración arquitectónica, trabajadas, se presta especial atención a las interpretaciones y aplicaciones dadas como instrumento. Teniendo como pilar la idea foucaultiana de “caja de herramientas”, en este estudio, se logró darle una nueva interpretación a la noción de heterotopía: es útil para interpretar rasgos de los edificios y ciudades en la posmodernidad. Se discute en este sentido, de que la naturaleza heterotópica – “lo otro”- está en la esencia de lo posmoderno. Esto sirvió para concluir que, a partir de lo singular, “lo otro” (o sea, lo extraño), lo heterotópico, en la arquitectura posmoderna, se puede entender como formas otras (en relación con lo moderno). Esto deviene en paradoja: lo singular generalizado como nuevo orden.
