Multiple infection of individuals is rather the rule than the exception and surveys of wild populations have revealed that coinfections, where more than one parasite simultaneously infects an individual, are more common than would be expected by random. Most research on ecological and evolutionary consequences of parasite infections at the within-host level has focused on interactions between single-host single-parasite combinations or followed the effects of parasite species pairs.
