Tractament d'emissions gasoses amb altes càrregues d'amoníac mitjançant tecnologies biològiques avançades

The growth in world population has led to a significant increase in the generation of wastes (solid, liquid and gaseous). Waste gas is probably the major issue in the case of waste treatment, due to the fact that once the pollutant is emitted into the atmosphere, its recovery and treatment are both very difficult and expensive. The main problems related to the waste gases are the global warming, the photochemical smoke or the acid rain, among others. The most extensively implemented systems are the physical-chemical treatments, such as adsorption with activated carbon, wet scrubbing and incineration. However, these treatments suffer two main drawbacks: firstly, they are environmentally unfriendly because in transferring a gas phase to a liquid phase (wet-scrubber) or to a solid phase (activated carbon), a secondary waste stream is generated; and secondly, these treatments, particularly incineration, all have high operational costs. For this reason, it is important to find more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternatives to treat polluted gaseous streams. In biological-based treatments, pollutants can be either oxidized or reduced by specialized microorganisms to non-toxic or less harmful products. The main advantages they have over conventional physical-chemical treatment techniques are that they can be conducted at environmental temperatures (10-40 ºC) at atmospheric pressure and hardly any chemicals are required. This thesis is focused on the treatment of the high ammonia loads by biological techniques. Ammonia is related to the generation of photochemical smog, the formation of fine particles and also the eutrophication of surface water when it is in high concentrations, due to excessive growth of plants and algae. Ammonia is one of the main pollutants emitted in the industrial facilities. Some of the industrial activities where ammonia emissions can be found are wastewater treatment plants, the agricultural industry and composting plants, where ammonia emissions of 300 ppmv can be found with peaks that can reach up to 1000 ppmv. One of the biggest problems, when ammonia is treated by biooxidation, is the accumulation of the inhibitory species. Thus, the correct management of these compounds is crucial for the proper system performance. In order to overcome these limitations, this thesis shows the results obtained for different bioreactor configurations (biotrickling filters and bioscrubbers). In order to evaluate the operational limits of these configurations in the treatment of high ammonia loads, the technologies have been evaluated both at semi-industrial scale (real effluents from a composting plant) and at laboratory scale. Although the biological treatment of ammonia emissions could reduce or eliminate the amount of this pollutant that is emitted into the atmosphere, it generated a secondary stream with nitrite or nitrate (by-products of ammonia biological oxidation). However, these species still to have a negative impact on the environment. For this reason, in order to develop a process of zero nitrogen emissions, different reactors have been evaluated to carry out the complete removal of nitrite and nitrate through denitrification. Again, this process has been evaluated on both at laboratory and a semi-industrial scale. Thus, after affirming the feasibility of biological treatments of high ammonia loads as an economically and environmentally friendly alternative than physicochemical processes, this thesis shows the most favourable operational parameters for the treatment of gaseous emissions with high ammonia load, hence allowing the scaling of these technologies at industrial scale.En els darrers anys s'ha produït un increment considerable de la generació de residus sòlids, líquids i gasosos. De tots aquests, els residus gasosos són probablement els que tenen una major problemàtica associada, ja que un cop han estat emesos a l'atmosfera la seva recuperació és complicada i el seu tractament s'encareix. A més a més, un cop els gasos són alliberats a l'atmosfera aquests poden recorre grans distancies amb molt poc temps, afectant grans àrees de terreny. Les principals problemàtiques associades als contaminants gasosos són l'increment de la temperatura planetària, la generació de boirum o la pluja àcida, entre altres. Les tècniques fisicoquímiques estan àmpliament establertes pel tractament de les emissions gasoses. No obstant això, aquestes tenen associades un alt consum de reactius, combustibles o catalitzadors amb un cost elevat. Això fa que el cost operatiu d'aquestes tecnologies sigui elevat. Per aquesta raó, és important trobar solucions ambientalment i econòmicament sostenible pel tractament d'aquestes emissions. En aquest sentit els tractaments biològics es mostren com una prometedora alternativa. En el cas dels tractaments biològics, el contaminant pot ser tant oxidat com reduït a productes menys perillosos i menys tòxics mitjançant microorganismes especialitzats. Els principals avantatges dels tractaments biològics són que es poden dur a terme a temperatura ambient (10-40 ºC), a pressió atmosfèrica i que el seu consum de reactius és reduït en comparació a les tècniques fisicoquímiques. Aquesta tesi és centra en el tractament de les emissions d'altes càrregues d'amoníac mitjançant tècniques biològiques. L'amoníac és un contaminant primari, el qual està relacionat amb la generació de boirum, la formació de partícules i també amb l'eutrofització de les aigües superficials quan aquest es troba en altes concentracions, per a un creixement excessiu de plantes i algues. L'amoníac és un dels principals contaminants emesos en l'àmbit industrial. Algunes de les activitats industrials on es poden trobar emissions d'amoníac són les plantes depuradores daigües residuals, la indústria agropecuària i plantes de compostatge, on es poden trobar emissions d'amoníac de 300 ppmv amb pics que poden arribar fins a 1000 ppmv. Un dels majors problemes a l'hora dimplementar el tractament biològic de l'amoníac és l'acumulació d'espècies inhibitòries. És per aquesta raó que la correcta gestió d'aquests compostos esdevé crucial per aconseguir el correcte desenvolupament de la biomassa i garantir un correcte funcionament del sistema. Amb la finalitat de sobrepassar aquestes limitacions, en aquesta tesi es mostren els resultats obtinguts per a diferents configuracions de bioreactors (biofiltres percoladors i biorentadors). Amb l'objectiu d'avaluar els límits operacionals d'aquestes configuracions en el tractament damoníac a altes càrregues, les tecnologies s'han avaluat tant a escala semi-industrial (efluents reals procedents duna planta de compostatge) com a escala laboratori. Tot i que el tractament biològic de les emissions d'amoníac permet reduir o eliminar la quantitat daquest contaminant que es emesa a l'atmosfera, aquest es oxidat biològicament a nitrit o nitrat. No obstant això, aquestes espècies continuen tenien un impacte negatiu sobre el medi ambient. És per aquesta raó, que amb la finalitat de desenvolupar un procés d'emissions de nitrogen zero, s'han avaluat diferents reactors per a dur a terme l'eliminació del nitrit i nitrat mitjançant un procés de desnitrificació. Novament, aquest procés s'ha avaluat tan a escala laboratori com a escala semi-industrial. Així doncs, un cop demostrada la viabilitat dels tractaments biològics d'altes càrregues d'amoníac com alternativa econòmicament i ambientalment més sostenible que els processos fisicoquímics, aquesta tesi mostra els paràmetres operacionals més favorables pel tractament d'emissions gasoses amb alta càrrega d'amoníac, permetent així l'escalat d'aquestes tecnologies a escala industrial.Recursos naturals i medi ambien
