PENGARUH PEMBERIAN EKSTRAK DAUN KENIKIR (Cosmos caudatus Kunth) TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN Propionibacterium acnes SECARA IN VITRO

Background: Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is the dominant bacteria in the sebaceous follicles and associated with the occurrence of acne vulgaris (AV). Some antibiotics for P. acnes such as clindamycin and erythromycin are limited in their use because of the high resistance rate. Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus Kunth) is one of the natural ingredients that contains various phytochemicals, including flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. The phytochemical content has antibacterial activity and has the potential to be an alternative antibacterial treatment using natural ingredients. Objective: The objective of this research was to determine the effect of administration of kenikir leaf extract on the growth of P. acnes bacteria in vitro. Method: The research method with true experimental using post-test only control group design. The method used was the disc dilution and diffusion method with concentrations of kenikir leaf extract of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, 0.78%, and 0.39%. and 2 controls; Material control and Germ control. Data was analyzed using One Way Anova test and Post Hoc Games-Howell test. Result and discussion: The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was obtained from dilution, at a concentration of 6.25% and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was obtained at a concentration of 25%. The MIC from disc diffusion method could not be determined because the zone of inhibition did not appear. The One Way ANOVA test showed a significant difference between treatments (p = 0.000) and the Post Hoc Games-Howell test showed that the concentration that started to give a significant effect on reducing the number of colonies was a concentration of 1.56%. Conclusion: In this research it can be concluded that kenikir leaf extract has an effect on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes in vitro
