TEACHERS’ CHALLENGES: A STUDY ON THE ONLINE ENGLISH TEACHING AT INDONESIA INTERACTIVE STANDARD SCHOOL IN MALANG

Recently, the spreading of the corona virus diseases (Covid-19) causes the most significant disruption of human history in 2020. Regarding this situation, the classroom activity is adjusted into online teaching and learning. Therefore, it might cause new challenges in teaching and learning process by all the teachers in Indonesia. In addition, the aim of this study is to discover the challenges faced by the teachers in teaching English online during the Covid-19 pandemic and how to lessen them. This study used descriptive qualitative to explore the phenomena about challenges faced by the teachers during online teaching. Further, this study involved four English teachers at Indonesia Interactive Standard School in Malang. Moreover, the data collecting was carried out through observation and semi-structured interview. The outcomes revealed the challenges emerged partly from students’ side and teachers’ side. The challenges from the students’ side include vocabulary issue students’ mispronouncing, concentration issue, students’ boredom, discipline issue, confidence issue, unstable internet access, and reluctant to answer teacher’s questions. Meanwhile, from the teachers’ side include gauging students’ understanding, unstable internet connection, and designing teaching material. The further result portrayed that giving treatment to improve vocabulary bank, explain how to pronounce the word correctly, create an attractive learning, reprimand the students who had discipline issue, must be a friendly teachers to increase students’ confidence, employed variety of methods to deliver the topics if the internet access is unstable, assessing the student’s performance to gauge students’ understanding, and the last create simple material were several solutions to lessen those challenges taken from the teachers
