Highlights • Alkaline rocks including nepheline syenites, monzogabbros and nepheline-monzosyenites are abundant in NW Iran. • 40Arsingle bond39Ar data show ages of 39.2–43.6 Ma for plutonic rocks and 41.8 Ma for crosscutting trachy-andesitic dikes. • Isotope modelling suggests mixing between depleted mantle and sediment melts for the formation of these rocks.
