The formation of blood vessels during embryonic development occurs by two distinct morphogenetic mechanisms, vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Vasculogenesis refers to the formation of a primary vascular network, while angiogenesis is the phenomenon under which new blood vessels are generated. Both processes are important for the development of a fully functional circulation system. Many factors play an important role in angiogenesis regulation and many pathophysiological processes are related to the disruption of this regulation, such as obesity, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetic retinopathy and several types of cancer.
