Greek religious architecture and time: conservation, restorations, transformations

The Greek ancient religious buildings, exposed to the wear of time, demanded conservation, restoration and transformation works. The severeness of the damages, the practical and functional demands and the use of each building were among the factors that formed the decision for the execution of the interventions as well as the techniques used for their implementation. The craftsmen made use of several practices in hand, which varied according to the type of intervention to be executed. The techniques and the materials in use, which provoked small or vast scale alterations to the building character, frequently presented an aesthetic outcome which did not correspond to the great creations of Greek architecture.Tα αρχαία ελληνικά θρησκευτικά κτήρια εκτεθειμένα στη δοκιμασία του χρόνου απαιτούσαν εργασίες συντήρησης, αποκατάστασης και μετατροπές. Το εύρος των φθορών, οι πρακτικές και λατρευτικές ανάγκες και η χρήση του εκάστοτε κτηρίου αποτέλεσαν παράγοντες που επιδρούσαν τόσο στην απόφαση των επεμβάσεων όσο και στην υλοποίηση των εργασιών. Για την εκτέλεση των εργασιών πολλαπλές μέθοδοι ήταν στη διάθεση των τεχνιτών, οι οποίες διέφεραν σύμφωνα με τον τύπο της επέμβασης. Οι τεχνικές και τα υλικά οι οποίες επέφεραν μικρής ή μεγάλης έκτασης αλλαγές στη φυσιογνωμία του κτηρίου είχαν ως συνέπεια ένα αισθητικό αποτέλεσμα το οποίο συχνά δεν συμφωνούσε με αυτό των μεγάλων δημιουργημάτων της ελληνικής αρχιτεκτονικής.Les bâtiments religieux grecs, soumis à l 'épreuve du temps, n'ecessitent - et même parfois à plusieurs reprises - des travaux d'entretien, de restauration et de transformation. L'envergure des détériorations, les besoins pratiques et cultuels, la fonction de chaque bâtiment sont des facteurs qui influencent non seulement la décision d'intervenir sur un bâtiment, mais aussi le déroulement des travaux. Pour ces derniers, une série de méthodes sont à la disposition des techniciens, méthodes qui diffèrent selon le type d'intervention. Les techniques et les matériaux utilisés permettent des changements plus ou moins considérables sur l'aspect du bâtiment, avec comme conséquence un résultat esthétique qui n'est pas parmi celui des plus grandes créations de l'architecture grecqu
