A Chimeric project? Forest supplies from Western Pyrenees for the Spanish Royal Navy in the 18th century

The geographical extent of the Spanish Empire and the own composite structure of Spanish Monarchy obliged it to use intermediaries in order to reach the most recondite places and to take advantage of timber resources available. The aim of the research is to analyse the specific case of those intermediaries who acted in the western Pyrenees, discussing how did they negotiate with the local communities, who owned the resources, and how did they manage the collection and transport of them up to the royal arsenals. We will focus on two specific cases, which allow weighting the impact of the contracts with the Crown and of the intermediation with rural communities in their careers and patrimonies. Despite the numerous difficulties experienced, they prevented the use of aforementioned resources by the Navy not becoming a chimera. They took part in the building of the State, being its eyes and executive arm.La amplitud geográfica de su imperio y la propia estructura compuesta de la Monarquía hispánica le obligaron a utilizar intermediarios para poder llegar a los lugares más recónditos y aprovechar los recursos madereros de los que disponía. La presente investigación trata de conocer el caso concreto de aquellos intermediarios que actuaron en el Pirineo occidental, analizando cómo negociaron con las comunidades locales, poseedoras de dichos recursos, y cómo organizaron la extracción y transporte de los mismos hasta los reales arsenales. Nos centraremos en dos casos concretos que permiten calibrar el impacto que la firma de asientos con la corona y la intermediación con las comunidades rurales tuvo en sus patrimonios y carreras. A pesar de las numerosas dificultades que encontraron, su papel fue imprescindible para que el aprovechamiento de dichos recursos por la Real Armada no fuese una quimera.
