The free trade agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico presents an unprecedented market prospect for the automobile industry. It can now rationalize the manufacturing operations and achieve better economies of scale by consolidating inefficient Mexican assembly activities with those of the U.S. and Canada. An interesting component of this restructuring is the potential division of labor, in which small cars are produced in Mexico. This study aims to check the feasibility of this arrangement by providing possible scenarios for the future production patterns under different circumstances.
